Septic System Maintenance Guide

Good septic care is mostly unglamorous: inspect, pump when needed, manage water, dispose of waste properly and protect the drainfield.

1. Inspect and pump

EPA says the average household system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic professional; household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems may need more frequent inspection.

2. Use water efficiently

Excess hydraulic loading can strain a system. Repair leaks and spread high-water-use activities where practical.

3. Dispose of waste properly

Keep inappropriate solids and harmful chemicals out of drains and toilets.

4. Protect the drainfield

Avoid driving or parking heavy vehicles over the field and manage excess surface water.
