Signs of Septic System Failure
Some septic symptoms should move you away from shopping and toward diagnosis.
Common warning signs identified by EPA
- Sewage or wastewater backing up into household plumbing
- Very slow tubs, showers or sinks
- Gurgling plumbing
- Standing water or damp areas near the tank or drainfield
- Sewage odors around the tank or drainfield
- Unusually bright green, spongy grass over the system during dry weather
If sewage backs up: avoid contact because it can contain harmful pathogens. Contact your local health/regulatory authority or an appropriate septic professional.
